Pichon Comtesse Reserve Pauillac 2022
Country: France Region: Bordeaux
Varietal: 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc
Vintage: 2022 Colour: Red Style: Dry
Producer: Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse Lalande
Ideally located in Pauillac, on the banks of the Gironde Estuary, the Pichon Comtesse vineyard covers 102 hectares (252 acres). Here, the vineyard and the wines are managed independently of each other. Each of the estate's plots are tended throughout the year with equal attention to detail and precision before the grapes are harvested and vinified separately. In perfect harmony with the Grand Vin, Réserve de Pichon Comtesse, the estate's second wine, offers another interpretation of the unique and singular style of this Pauillac Grand Cru Classé. This subtle and elegant wine is delicately revealed through floral and fruity notes. Its depth and balance, direct yet velvety, give it unique grandeur in which the language of the senses is key. It goes beyond mere taste. Full of charm, it has that extra-special something that makes it stands out as a true ambassador for Pichon Comtesse.
This is the popular second wine of Château Pichon Lalande - previously known as Reserve de la Comtesse. There is always a high percentage of Merlot in the blend here which makes the wine soft and easy to drink when young. One of Bordeaux's most popular second labels and on top form in recent vintages.
95/100 Points
"Deep garnet-purple in colour, it comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant scents of juicy black plums, blackberry pie, and boysenberry preserves, plus hints of black cherries, cedar chest, and lavender. The medium to full-bodied palate coats the mouth with perfumed black fruit preserves, supported by plush tannins and just enough freshness, finishing on an earthy note."
93/100 Points
"Mid ruby in colour with a slick nose of blueberry, vanilla and cinnamon. The palate has a wild hedgerow quality, layering blackberry, cherry and red berry fruit. Meaty, smoky wood builds to the finish, but it is in harmony with the fruit. A very fine example of the vintage, polished and solar without excess."

"Ripe black and blue fruits as well as some chocolaty, tobacco nuances define the aromatics, and it's a rich, full-bodied, velvety textured second wine that's going to drink brilliantly right out of the gate. This is well worth seeking out."
93/100 Points
"The al dente fruit is so attractive with blackcurrants, dark plums and orange peel. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with tannins that start slowly, building at the end to a crescendo of intensity and power. It’s muscular and chewy but not overdone. A great second wine of Pichon Lalande. Needs time to soften and come together. Best after 2029."
93/100 Points
"Fully ripe fruits, smoky and creamy character with charred raspberry and cassis, violet-edged, pencil lead, bitter chocolate, cocoa dust. An impressive wine, tannins close in a little tightly on the finish, with dried rosemary and black pepper spicy translating the heat of the vintage."
Tasting Notes:
The nose of this wine is particularly complex and emblematic of the Pauillac terroir, with mineral notes of cedar and liquorice that gradually give way to richer aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and violet. The palate is juicy and some flavour. The wine starts out ethereal with delicious notes of strawberry and cherry, going onto reveal all its charm and softness before culminating in a long finish with smooth, precise and powdery tannins.
Food Pairing: Grilled lamb chops, beef tenderloin, roasted duck, and mushroom-based dishes, as well as hard cheeses.
